Facilities

Skalitude is set up as a model of sustainable living, the name 'Skalitude' comes from a Salish word that means 'to be in harmony with Nature'. The facilities are completely off-grid - all electricity is generated on-site, mainly from 2.1 kW of solar panels with generator back up for winter.  There is plenty of power in summer, in winter and cloudy weather we ask guests to be mindful and turn off lights when not in use.  (We have found that crock pots really drain the system, so please don't bring one!)

In 2010 a solar hot water system was installed in the main lodge. This heats water in a 120 gallon tank, and can also circulate hot water through the floor, providing radiant heat to the building. The main heat source is a wood stove, most of the wood is collected locally and sustainably right in Smith Canyon with the remainder coming from neighboring Libby Creek drainages. By collecting this dead wood from the forest we are reducing the fuel loading of the forest lands, thereby helping to reduce the intensity of any wildfires in the area.

Skalitude Retreat's main building is the three-bedroom Lodge, perched above the meadow with views all around the canyon. It features a rustic wood interior and a handsome rock fireplace. The cathedral ceiling and skylights in the living room/gathering space create an inspiring atmosphere, whether for rest and renewal or for convivial conversation with family and friends. The bamboo floor with radiant heat keeps the space cozy and warm in winter, and is perfect for yoga and other movement arts.

The Lodge bedrooms have two queen beds and three twin beds between them. Even the lighest sleepers find peace here, lulled by the deep silence of the land.  For your complete comfort, there are now down comforters on all the beds!

The passive-solar design of the new Bermhouse is in keeping with Skalitude Retreat's earth-friendly intent.  It has six rooms, and three half-bathrooms. Each room can sleep 2 to 3 people.  There are three full bathrooms in the Lodge, two with entry from the porch so you don't have to go through the Lodge.

The cedar-lined, wood-fired sauna has its own stunning view overlooking the meadow. A great way to recover from a day of hiking or skiing, the sauna also cleanses the effects of a stressful modern life.

Our 2000 square foot Sky Lodge is a great addition for summer groups. It's a beautiful, breezy outdoor meeting or dining space, great for weddings or conferences.  It has a very unique and artistic ambiance, and gets rave reviews at events.  Seats up to 200 people.  There are more photos of the Sky Lodge on the wedding page.

There is also a 15 x 15 tent that is used on the back lawn of the lodge.  It is included, along with outside tables and chairs, in the normal rental rates for groups with more than 10 people.

For groups of 10 people or more, Skalitude Retreat can offer catered meals prepared by local chefs specializing in local, organic ingredients.  They offer a range of menu plans, from high-carb, whole grain options for active guests, to raw food meals for those seeking lighter fare, or a range of vegetarian or wheat-free options.  Menus take advantage of seasonal produce, and can be tailored to suit your group.  Contact us for sample menus!

Skalitude has entered the wireless age!  We now have wireless internet access at the lodge.
